After the recess, the court resumed, and Liam was back on the stand. He was looking a lot better and brighter for the break. His mother was happy to see him a lot more cheerful.
âLiam, I am going to ask you some questions about Diana, if thatâs OK?â said Mackenna when she was allowed to begin.
âYes, sure, itâs fine.â
Diana sat up a little straighter at this, now it concerned her much more closely.
âWhat was your relationship with Diana?â Mackenna asked.
âWe were, erm, lovers mainly.â
âSo, did you sleep with her?â
âYes.â
Once again, his mother pursed her lips, ever since she had discovered Liamâs prolific sex life, she had been less than keen to hear about it.
âExclusively?â
âNo, no I didnât I had some other girlfriends to be fair.â Liam looked a little embarrassed.
His mother rolled her eyes, she now knew exactly what he was like.
âWhat did Diana feel about that?â
âShe didnât like it, she got quite angry about it at times.â
âHow did her anger manifest itself?â
âShe threw things, broke plates, slapped my face.â
âIs it fair to say she got quite emotional?â
âYes, she did, very emotional at times.â
A few recollections stirred in his mind and he winced slightly when he thought about them.
âTell us then, about the time in the hotel which ended up with you being shot.â
âSure, well I was on the run from the Garda.â
The judgeâs head whipped around at this.
âJust a moment, Mr OâShea, did you say you were on the run from the Garda?â interrupted the judge.
âJudge, I was on the run, but not anymore,â Liam said hastily in the case the judge thought the court was harbouring a fugitive from justice.
âI see, thatâs good, but just for my understanding why were you on the run?â
âThe thing is, Judge, there was an accident, I had shot a Garda officer by mistake, in a struggle, and I ran away, itâs been cleared up now though, the misunderstanding at least.â
âOK, thatâs fine, Iâm sure thereâs more to it than youâve said, but itâs not really relevant to this case so I wonât ask any more. You may continue, Ms Mackenna.â
âThank you, Judge,â said Mackenna, and turned to her witness, âLiam, could you continue what you were telling us about the hotel.â
âSure, yes. Well I was on the run, Iâd been staying with a friend, but I couldnât stay there anymore so I asked Diana to help me. She told me to go to a hotel in the country. I did and then she came down later that day.â
âSo, you went to the hotel and what happened then?â
âWell, it was all fine until the morning and we were having breakfast, talking, as you do, and then she said we could go away together, go somewhere, and well, the thing is I didnât want to.â
âWhy not, it sounds like a good idea in your situation?â
âBecause, she was in love with me, I mean like really in love and I wasnât, and I felt I would be deceiving her if I did go.â Liam was sincere on this point.
